SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Britain's Amazing Aircraft Industry
DESCRIPTION:14:00-14:30 – Refreshments – 14:30-14:45 – Announcements – 14:45-16:00 – Talk \n\n\n\n\n\nBritain once had an enormous and arguably the most advanced aircraft industry in the world. How did we reach there and why are we now so weak\, or are we? Greed\, Bad Management\, Corruption and Politics all played a part. \n\n\n\n\nThe talk includes both the civil and military side of aviation. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be given by Andy Richardson\, who has been involved in Aviation throughout his adult life. Starting with an 18-year flying career in The Royal Air Force which included crewing the nuclear armed Avro Vulcan during the cold war. In 1980 he took early retirement to pursue a second career focusing on International Business Development within the Aerospace Industry.Initially working with British Aerospace in the UK. Later\, a break enabled him to join the American giants McDonnell Douglas and then the Boeing Company following their merger. His last Boeing appointment was as a European Marketing Director within the Military Aircraft Division. Post retirement\, he continued to work with them and other companies as an Aerospace consultant into his early 70s.He now travels the country delivering a range of interesting talks – all of course with an Aviation theme!

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - AGM + "Caring for the River Mole"
DESCRIPTION:14:00-14:30 – Refreshments \n\n\n\n14:30-14:45 – Announcements \n\n\n\n14:45-16:00 – Talk \n\n\n\nThe talk will be given by:- Sue and Nigel Bond \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAGM + Caring for the River Mole Talk\n\n\nWe will first hold our brief AGM which will be followed by the talk. \n\n\n\nMyth has it that the River Mole is so named because it flows underground for part of its journey through Sussex and Surrey.  Rising Southwest of Crawley the River Mole flows Northwards to the Thames\, and in its upper reaches it has an extensive network of tributaries including the Gatwick Stream\, the Stanford Brook and the Burstow Stream. \n\n\n\nAs it flows downstream it passes through historic Norbury Park before flowing through Leatherhead and eventually joining the Thames at Molesey opposite Hampton Court Palace.  The Mole is famous for its spectacular river cliffs near Box Hill and its swallow holes where the river at time of low flow disappears underground before emerging further downstream. \n\n\n\nThe Southeast River Trust co-host the catchment partnership for the Mole with the Surrey Wildlife Trust.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Pluck\, Luck and Parachutes
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:- Sharon Wright \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Pluck\, Luck and Parachutes”\n\n\nEdwardian skydivers Lily Cove and Dolly Shepherd were among the brave breed of women who made a living leaping from balloons and floating to earth by parachute\, to the wild delight of the crowds that gathered to watch. \n\n\n\nExcept it didn’t always happen like that. Tragic ‘Leaping Lily’ fell to her doom in highly mysterious circumstances over the West Yorkshire moors in 1906. Meanwhile Dolly repeatedly cheated death\, executed an astonishing mid-air rescue in 1908 and lived into her 90s. Sharon tells the often heart-breaking\, always nail-biting stories of these plucky and liberated young women. \n\n\n\nSharon is an author and journalist with a long career writing and editing for magazines\, newspapers and websites such as The Guardian\, Daily Express\, BBC\, Glamour\, Red\, The Lady and New York Post.

DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:- Simon Waterfield \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Agincourt Archer”\n\n\nThe story covers the archer’s journey to join the army; along the way he meets Chaucer and the pilgrims on the way to Canterbury. Spoken and acted in a way to include the audience in his reminiscence\, the archer tells of his experiences at war at Agincourt\, how they affected him and his family on his return and his reflections on the meaning of war and remembrance. Humour and emotion are strong elements of the tale\, as is some assistance from Shakespeare. \n\n\n\nSimon Waterfield is a historical researcher\, writer and storyteller. He creates stories that bring history and people to life. Historical Interpretation through drama answers the question ‘What is History?’ from the view of a common man caught up in historic events.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region - ABC Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:- John De Ronde \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region ABC Dreams”\n\n\nCurrently swinging between London and Tanzania\, I came to Tanzania originally on a Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) expedition in September 2007. I was assigned to the Marangu Teachers Training College\, perched on the slopes of Kilimanjaro\, to train staff on the use of ICT in Education. Marangu TTC is just down the road from where Frank was working so it was then that our paths crossed. \n\n\n\nWhile working within the VSO placement I became acquainted with the village of Lyamungo Sinde through a colleague at the college. I was introduced to the secretary of the village committee\, one Bibi Elinaike Lema\, who outlined the problems facing the village\, including the 172 orphans and vulnerable children she had documented. \n\n\n\nIntroduced to the then pastor Nixon Kowero of the Lutheran congregation who verified Bibi’s data and who was already helping some of the children\, I decided to set up ABCDreams (UK) with the help of my friend Frank in Canada. He suggested I use his model for our constitution. I worked in partnership with the pastor who guided my projects and eased my way into the community. Since setting up ABCDreams (UK) I have worked to establish contacts and a network in the UK to support the vulnerable children of Lyamungo Sinde. \n\n\n\nIn our first year of operation\, 2013\, we supported 65 primary school children in 3 local schools. This figure has stayed quite constant at primary level. This year (2020) we support 71 children. In 2013 funds would not allow full support so we whittled the number down to the most vulnerable. Since then many of the children we started with are now at secondary school where we continue to provide support. The total number of children hovers around 100 year-on-year.
