SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - AGM + England’s Greatest Magician
DESCRIPTION:“AGM / England’s Greatest Magician by Ian Keable” \n\n\nWe will first hold our brief AGM which will be followed by the the talk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Devant was the first President of The Magic Circle\, the first magician to be booked on a Royal Variety Show and the second person to publicly show animated films in this country. He invented many illusions and tricks that are still performed today and wrote up the methods in some of the best ever books written on magic.  In this talk Ian traces Devant’s career from working with the Royal American Midgets through to his partnership in the renowned Maskelyne and Devant shows of the early 20th century.  Forced to retire when he was only 52 through ill health\, he ended his life in the Royal Hospital and Home for Incurables.  He is considered by many to be the greatest magician this country has ever produced\, his popularity perhaps best summed up in his by-line ‘All done with kindness’.

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - The Development of British Style - Paul Atterbury
DESCRIPTION:“THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH STYLE +DESERT ISLAND ANTIQUES + LIFE ON THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW” by Paul Atterbury \nFrom the 1870s the British domestic house and its contents changed almost beyond recognition\, reflecting the social and economic revolution that paved the way for the modern world of today. Many factors contributed to this change\, from William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement\, to the rise of the department store\, suburban living\, the garden and the emancipation of women. After the First World War\, the pace of change increased\, prompting rapid stylistic development\, from 1920s and 1930s Art Deco to the modernism of the 1950s and 1960s and the style wars of the late 20th century. The first two talks consider architecture\, interior and domestic design and the products that reflected the fashions of the time. In the process they show how the last 150 years have determined the way we live now. \nPaul Atterbury has been involved all his life in the world of art and antiques\, as a writer\, historian\, collector and exhibition curator. The two talks in the afternoon offer an insight into his life\, his enthusiasms and his time as a member of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow team of experts. \n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Arts and Crafts House and Garden11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 At Home in the 20th Century12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Paul Atterbury’s Desert Island Antiques2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Life on the Antiques Roadshow4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Paul Atterbury is a writer\, lecturer\, historian\, curator and broadcaster specialising in the art\, architecture\, design and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries. As a writer he has written or edited over 50 books\, covering art\, antiques and design\, travel\, canals and railways\, history and the First World War. Paul has curated exhibitions for the Victoria & Albert Museum and for other institutions in Britain and the USA and he has worked on the Antiques Roadshow since 1990. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Tutankhamun\, The Boy King - Clive Barham Carter
DESCRIPTION:“The Most Famous Pharaoh of Them All: Tutankhamun\, The Boy King” by Clive Barham Carter \nTutankhamen was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who was the last of his royal family to rule during the end of the 18th dynasty; he ruled c. 1334 – 1325 BC in the conventional chronology during the New Kingdom of Egyptian history. His father was the heretical king Akhenaten and his mother was his father’s sister\, identified through DNA testing. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun’s nearly intact tomb\, funded by Lord Carnarvon\, received worldwide press coverage. With over 5000 artefacts\, it sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt\, for which Tutankhamun’s mask\, now in the Egyptian Museum\, remains a popular symbol. \n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Valley of the Kings – the Where11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Carter and Carnarvon – the Who12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 The Tomb – the What2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Tut.Ankh.Amen and Restoration – and the Why4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Clive Barham Carter studied Egyptology at Cambridge (as the only undergraduate). He was awarded a scholarship with the Egypt Exploration Society to dig at Saqqara under Professor Walter Emery. Later\, he joined the staff at Charterhouse as a History teacher\, a position he accepted with some trepidation\, having been a pupil there. He managed to maintain his interest in Ancient Egypt by lecturing at the City Literary Institute\, and by sneaking Egypt into his General Studies classes. In retirement\, he has returned to his enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt and now lectures at the Guildford Institute\, and for U3A\, local groups and museums. He is an accredited lecturer with The Arts Society. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

I have reserved a Pullman carriage which has 30 seats.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is an option to go on to Bodiam Castle but that might make it a long day. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“Two bars of chocolate a day can slash the risk of heart attack and stroke…really?” by  Dr. Lynda Ware \n \nLynda explores the relevance of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in everyday health decisions. She explores what EBM is all about and why it is important. Examples include where disasters have happened through lack of evidence and how drug licencing laws help ensure that treatments are safe and effective.  Lynda also presents media headlines and encourages critical thinking to look behind what we are being told. \nLynda works with Cochrane\, an international network dedicated to providing high quality evidence to support health decision-making worldwide. It is a non-profit organisation and in the U.K. is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and hosted by the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation. Since joining Cochrane UK in 2014\, Lynda has visited many village halls and community centres around Oxford talking to non-medical audiences about Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and its relevance to everyday life. \nThere will be time for questions afterwards.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“The Able Seamen and Tragedy of  HMS Titanic” by Angela Young \n\n\nAngela is a Great Granddaughter of a survivor of the Titanic tragedy and as such has personal details and research passed down to her from her family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI found letters between my great-grandmother\, the Countess of Rothes\, and Able Seaman Thomas Jones\, the aristocrat and the able seaman of this talk\, while working on my novel THE DANCE of LOVE. Both survived the sinking of RMS Titanic. \n\n\n\nEverybody knows that on her maiden voyage Titanic hit an iceberg and sank\, but the people who kept hope alive among the frozen\, frightened lifeboat passengers\, the people who piloted those lifeboats\, are sometimes forgotten. This talk remembers two of them\, two who showed great courage\, skill and kindness on that tragic night; two whose backgrounds were quite different and who\, in any other circumstances\, would never have met.

SUMMARY:London Walks
DESCRIPTION:I have put together a series of London Walks which other members of U3A may enjoy. All of these walks have been carried out over the last two years by Exploring London Group 6.Walking is the only way to get to explore London and it is cheap and good for the environment. Each walk is typically 3 to 4 miles long and has an average of two to three hour “walking” time. Allowing for visits to the sites of interest on the route and the essential coffee and lunch breaks\, one should allow a whole day to complete each walk.To reduce costs\, we always travel “off-peak” leaving Leatherhead station on the 09.26 train. Three or four travellers can still travel for the price of two provided you travel together all day. The start of the majority of walks can be access either on foot from Waterloo or Victoria or by bus using a Concessionary Travel Pass. Travel to the walks listed below in bold is best undertaken by the London Underground due to the lengthy journey time from the Main Line stations. All the places of interest currently have free admission access. All these walks are suitable with young children with the exception of the “Jack the Ripper” walk which is best undertaken at night. I would highly recommend the Docklands Walk and the Great Fire of London walk for young children as the walks terminate with a visit to one of the Museum of London great museums which are now certainly some of the best places in Britain for children. The following are Walks which may be viewed or downloaded in PDF format. \n\n\n\nA Walk in the Royal ParksBloomsburyDocklands walkDulwichGreenwich Walk ( Via River Clipper )Hampstead WalkJack The Ripper WalkKensingtonMayfairRegents CanalRegents Park & MaryleboneRichmondRochesterSouthbank to Tower BridgeThe Great Fire of LondonThe Inns of Court WalkThe Royal Hospital ChelseaWestminsterWimbledon Village

SUMMARY:Visit to Dungeness Nuclear Power Station
DESCRIPTION:Our visit on July 5 was to Dungeness Nuclear Power Station. \n\n\n\n21 intrepid\, suitably dressed\, according to the strict rules of the Station\, boarded the Haines coach at 7.45 a.m. at Lower Shott for this very eventful drive to Dungeness\, which due to a rather severe accident on route meant that our driver Tony had to take the “scenic route” of bumpy and narrow roads before we finally arrived at our destination\, just a little bit later than had been planned. But thanks to John\, the organiser\, all was well. \n\n\n\nOn arrival we were taken into the safety area where we were told what would happen next. We were all kitted out in a bright orange jacket\, a pair of goggles\, a hard hat fitted with ear defenders and a radio to enable us to hear what our guide was telling us about. After proving who we were with our I.D. cards\, the next test was to walk through the scanning machine. Unfortunately\, those who have Titanium knees caused some concern\, but soon we were through to the next step. The level of security was tremendous\, and our guide was superb. What we learnt in those one and a half hours was excellent. \n\n\n\nAfter our visit was over\, our trusty driver took us to the Hythe and Dymchurch steam train for our next epic journey of 1 hour 40 minutes to Hythe. The carriages were so low down and so tiny we all had to turn sideways to board successfully. What a great ride with the steam whistle blowing. \n\n\n\nOur final destination was our late lunch at the fish restaurant\, pre booked\, where we tasted some of the finest fish and chips known to mankind. \n\n\n\nWell satisfied and a wee bit weary we boarded our trusty coach and made it safely back to Bookham in record time. \n\n\n\nThanks must go to our Vice Chairman John Edgcumbe for such a wonderful day out\, full of excitement\, adventure\, education and fun. \n\n\n\nThanks JOHN

SUMMARY:Summer Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Our Summer Event was the very successful Summer Picnic on the July 1 at the Bookham Scout Centre. Wow\, what a hot day! \n\n\n\nA marquee was supplied with open sides to enable us to keep out of the sun\, others sheltered under the large oak trees. \n\n\n\nThe food was served in the very cool area of the hall. Tables were decorated with lovely blue/white cloths. Plates and cutlery were supplied\, so all we had to do was help ourselves to all the goodies\, sit with our friends at a table and listen to the fabulous\, Anchor Pub Ukulele band\, which included one of our members. I will leave it to you all to spot which one. \n\n\n\nThe band was great and funny and we could sing along with all the tunes that we knew. What a wonderful afternoon. Thanks to the organisers.

SUMMARY:Theatre Trip
DESCRIPTION:On June 21 members had the privilege to watch Matthew Bourne’s ballet Cinderella by Prokofiev at the Woking theatre. Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has\, at its heart\, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot\, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. \n\n\n\nBeautiful music and marvellous ballet enjoyed by all. Some of our more senior members have now decided to take up ballet lessons!!!!
