He has published ten collections of poetry\, over twenty publications of limited-edition poetry\, art and collaborative works. He is a founder of the European Poetry Festival and has been teaching at Kingston University since 2014. James Haddow is the Taxi Driver Poet. He has published several collections of his verse which he describes as “racy\, raunchy\, topical\, soft\, sensitive\, brutal\, political\, satirical\, comical\, tough\, loving and spiteful” and much of it was originally delivered to the passengers in his taxi. Roger McGough was born and raised in Liverpool. A prolific writer\, he has published more than fifty books of adult and children’s poetry\, as well as several plays. Notable poetry collections include Defying Gravity (1992)\, The Way Things Are (1999)\, and That Awkward Age (2009). After university McGough dabbled as a pop singer and lyricist in the band the Scaffold which earned minor fame for his song “Lily the Pink” when topping the UK charts in 1968. Influenced by the Beat culture in the United States\, McGough embraces freedom of expression through his poems’ subjects and verse structure. He focuses primarily on the ordinary and every day\, and his poetry is both accessible and popular. He considers poetry a form of subversion and often uses various forms of humour\, particularly wordplay\, to confront serious topics in an effort to expose the subjectivity of reality. He currently hosts the Radio 4 program Poetry Please. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Amelia B. Edwards: The Great Forgotten Victorian Egyptologist
DESCRIPTION:“Amelia B. Edwards: The Great Forgotten Victorian Egyptologist” by Clive Barham Carter \n\n\n\nAmelia B. Edwards (1831–1892) was an English novelist\, journalist\, traveller\, and Egyptologist. Edwards toured Egypt in the winter of 1873–1874\, experiencing a fascination with the land and its cultures\, ancient and modern. Journeying southwards from Cairo in a hired dahabiyeh (manned houseboat) she and a companion visited Philae and ultimately reached Abu Simbel\, where they remained for six weeks. Edwards wrote a successful\, self-illustrated description of her Nile voyage entitled “A Thousand Miles up the Nile” (1877). Her travels in Egypt made her aware of increasing threats to ancient monuments from tourism and modern development. She set out to hinder these through public awareness and scientific endeavour\, becoming an advocate for research and preservation of them. In 1882\, she co-founded the Egypt Exploration Fund with Reginald Stuart Poole\, a curator at the British Museum. Edwards became joint Honorary Secretary of the Fund until her death. She gained the nickname “Godmother of Egyptology” for her contribution. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Early Life of Amelia Edwards – An Unusual Upbringing 11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 A Literary Career – Novelist\, Ghost Stories & The Travelogue of Egypt12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Travelling “A Thousand Miles up the Nile” in 1873 2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 A New Enthusiasm for Amelia Edwards & Her Legacy in Egyptology4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Clive Barham Carter studied Egyptology at Cambridge (as the only undergraduate). He was awarded a scholarship with the Egypt Exploration Society to dig at Saqqara under Professor Walter Emery. Later\, he joined the staff at Charterhouse as a History teacher\, a position he accepted with some trepidation\, having been a pupil there. He managed to maintain his interest in Ancient Egypt by lecturing at the City Literary Institute\, and by sneaking Egypt into his General Studies classes. In retirement\, he has returned to his enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt and now lectures at the Guildford Institute\, and for u3as\, local groups and museums. He is an accredited lecturer with The Arts Society. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Industrial Archaeology at Fifty
DESCRIPTION:“Industrial Archaeology at Fifty” by Professors David Perrett and Martin Adams \n\n\n\nMany IA societies have just achieved their half-century and in 2023 the Association for Industrial Archaeology will also achieve that milestone. After a period of rapid growth in the 1970s and 1980s due to the role played by many adult education classes the societies are now more mature. However\, most are struggling from the after-effects of COVID that led to many sites closing\, some permanently\, some practitioners stood down and even library research became impossible\, IA now needs to find new followers and new subjects. This study day will address some of these questions and maybe raise others. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Industrial Archaeology\, an Overview: 11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Beer and Pickles: Brewing & Some Related Industries in London12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Three Mills\, Bow & The Birth of Modern Biotechnology: 2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Industrial Archaeology in London Today:4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – David Perrett is Professor Emeritus of Bioanalytical Science\, Barts & the London School of Medicine\, Queen Mary University of London. A chemist with 200 papers on diseases and bioanalysis\, his interests relevant to today can be traced to a Yorkshire coal-mining town upbringing. He was President of the Newcomen Society for the History of Technology from 2007 to 2009 and is Chair of the Association for Industrial Archaeology. His interests include stationary steam engines especially Newcomen’s and IA in both Yorkshire and London\, where he is President of the Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society (GLIAS). Martin Adams is Emeritus Professor of Food Microbiology at the University of Surrey. He studied Molecular Sciences at the University of Warwick before being awarded an MSc and PhD in Microbial Chemistry at the University of Manchester. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region - ABC Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:- John De Ronde \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region ABC Dreams”\n\n\nCurrently swinging between London and Tanzania\, I came to Tanzania originally on a Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) expedition in September 2007. I was assigned to the Marangu Teachers Training College\, perched on the slopes of Kilimanjaro\, to train staff on the use of ICT in Education. Marangu TTC is just down the road from where Frank was working so it was then that our paths crossed. \n\n\n\nWhile working within the VSO placement I became acquainted with the village of Lyamungo Sinde through a colleague at the college. I was introduced to the secretary of the village committee\, one Bibi Elinaike Lema\, who outlined the problems facing the village\, including the 172 orphans and vulnerable children she had documented. \n\n\n\nIntroduced to the then pastor Nixon Kowero of the Lutheran congregation who verified Bibi’s data and who was already helping some of the children\, I decided to set up ABCDreams (UK) with the help of my friend Frank in Canada. He suggested I use his model for our constitution. I worked in partnership with the pastor who guided my projects and eased my way into the community. Since setting up ABCDreams (UK) I have worked to establish contacts and a network in the UK to support the vulnerable children of Lyamungo Sinde. \n\n\n\nIn our first year of operation\, 2013\, we supported 65 primary school children in 3 local schools. This figure has stayed quite constant at primary level. This year (2020) we support 71 children. In 2013 funds would not allow full support so we whittled the number down to the most vulnerable. Since then many of the children we started with are now at secondary school where we continue to provide support. The total number of children hovers around 100 year-on-year.

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Tunnels Trip
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 7 July 2022 \n\n\n\nVisit to Shell Grotto in Margate\, Lunch and Ramsgate Tunnels \n\n\n\nHidden underground\, the magnificent Shell Grotto of Margate held its secrets of the past\, until it was discovered in 1835. Approximately 4.6 million shells line the walls\, ceilings\, an altar\, and a dome that opens to the sky. The entire grotto is covered in symmetrically-balanced and geometric shell work. However\, nobody knows why or when this grand work of art was built\, or by whom. \n\n\n\nAccess to the Grotto includes two sets of stairs. The Grotto’s floor is uneven in places and has a slight camber. We regret it is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with reduced mobility. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRamsgate Tunnel Tours are 1.25 kilometres (0.78 mile) and will last for approximately 1 hour 30 mins. You will be accompanied by a guide throughout your tour. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended as the ground can be uneven (flat shoes\, boots). Flip-flops and thin sandals are not recommended. High heels are not permitted. The tunnels are a constant temperature of around 11 degrees Celsius; they may appear cold in summer but warm in winter. We are currently unable to accommodate mobility scooters\, wheelchairs\, prams and buggies.

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Understanding Turner: The Man\, His Life\, His Work - Prof Maria Chester
DESCRIPTION:“Understanding Turner: The Man\, His Life\, His Work” by Prof Maria Chester \nHIS LIFE: Joseph Mallord William Turner was born into a troubled family and destined to become an artist. His father\, William\, a central figure throughout his life\, encouraged him to pursue his ambitions. Turner’s relationships\, character\, dreams\, notes\, poems\, lead to our own portrait of Turner\, helping us to understand the man\, what we perceive from his everyday life leads to the second talk. He loved to travel and we are lucky to be able to follow him in his trips thanks to his notes on the sketches\, citing places and dates. HIS WORK: We owe him a new approach to landscape\, and new techniques\, applied mostly to watercolours. He added songs and poems to his paintings to reinforce their meaning. He was almost a story-teller who knew exactly what to show and how to show it. He applied everything he experienced in his paintings. Together with “Understanding Turner: the man and his life” this talk aims to leave a permanent impression about one of our great British artists of all times: Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner was a contradiction in himself: born in Covent Garden at the centre of London he became one of the most important British landscape painters. In the 19th century\, he became the most recognisable British artist abroad \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Life11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Life\, Understanding & Analysing his Work12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Work\, His Techniques & Methods2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Work4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Maria Chester studied Fine Arts & Art History. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Talks on Science - Andrew Hanson & Dr Kathryn Harkup
DESCRIPTION:“Talks on Science” by Andrew Hanson and Dr Kathryn Harkup \nThe National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is involved in ensuring all manner of walks of life function smoothly through the use of the National Measurement System. Andrew will briefly discuss what he feels are the top ten strangest things NPL has been involved in\, that he is allowed to talk about. Andrew will then talk on colour measurement. Colour informs\, influences consumer choices\, warns us and comforts us. How do we ascribe numbers to a human perception which is incredibly versatile and variable? The challenge is enormous and human colour perception science is still a lively topic today. Be warned! This talk will contain surprises. \nKathryn writes and gives regular public talks on the disgusting and dangerous side of science. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Magic of Colour – The talk will contain surprises – there’s a lot more to colour than meets the eye.11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Electronic Music – Park your prejudices and have fun listening to bizarre stories from its development.12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Poisons – Chemical methods of murder and how not to get away with it.2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Dying to be Beautiful – Killer cosmetics or the extraordinary things some people will do tomaintain the body beautiful.4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers – Andrew Hanson has been professionally measuring colour for 25 years; from evaluating the appearance of ornamental plants\, to building the world’s first national standards telespectroradiometer to calibrate the colour of visual display units and a machine to measure the shininess of cats.
