DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:-     Geof Roles \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Notorious Soho”\n\n\nAt the September meeting\, Geoff will introduce us to some of the “highs and lows”  in the history of “Notorious Soho”. \n\n\n\nGeoff spent his professional life in the building industry.  He was involved with many projects in the City of London and in the London docks\, in the days when they were working docks and not the sites of high-rise office buildings.  On retirement\, Geoff decided to study the history of our great capital city.  As a member of Fetcham U3A\, Geoff has given several  talks on London’s history and he has led many groups on visits to explore our capital city.

He has now been at King’s College London for 17 years. The work of Norman and his colleagues has been widely reported in newspapers and TV in the UK and abroad. \n\n\n\nNorman has wide experience of the Pharmaceutical Industry having worked for the Wellcome Foundation for many years. He was Head of Diabetes Research\, Biochemical Research and Cell Biology. After Wellcome he was Head of the Food Chemical Unit in the Department of Health. This unit provided advice to Ministers on the potential toxicological effects on health of both added and natural chemicals in food. \n\n\n\nHe is an Audax UK Veteran Cycling Champion and at 86 still spends time on his bike cycling around the Surrey countryside. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region - ABC Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by:-     John De Ronde \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tanzania and the Kilimanjaro Region ABC Dreams”\n\n\nCurrently swinging between London and Tanzania\, I came to Tanzania originally on a Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) expedition in September 2007. I was assigned to the Marangu Teachers Training College\, perched on the slopes of Kilimanjaro\, to train staff on the use of ICT in Education. Marangu TTC is just down the road from where Frank was working so it was then that our paths crossed. \n\n\n\nWhile working within the VSO placement I became acquainted with the village of Lyamungo Sinde through a colleague at the college. I was introduced to the secretary of the village committee\, one Bibi Elinaike Lema\, who outlined the problems facing the village\, including the 172 orphans and vulnerable children she had documented. \n\n\n\nIntroduced to the then pastor Nixon Kowero of the Lutheran congregation who verified Bibi’s data and who was already helping some of the children\, I decided to set up ABCDreams (UK) with the help of my friend Frank in Canada. He suggested I use his model for our constitution. I worked in partnership with the pastor who guided my projects and eased my way into the community. Since setting up ABCDreams (UK) I have worked to establish contacts and a network in the UK to support the vulnerable children of Lyamungo Sinde. \n\n\n\nIn our first year of operation\, 2013\, we supported 65 primary school children in 3 local schools. This figure has stayed quite constant at primary level. This year (2020) we support 71 children. In 2013 funds would not allow full support so we whittled the number down to the most vulnerable. Since then many of the children we started with are now at secondary school where we continue to provide support. The total number of children hovers around 100 year-on-year.

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Tunnels Trip
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 7 July 2022 \n\n\n\nVisit to Shell Grotto in Margate\, Lunch and Ramsgate Tunnels \n\n\n\nHidden underground\, the magnificent Shell Grotto of Margate held its secrets of the past\, until it was discovered in 1835. Approximately 4.6 million shells line the walls\, ceilings\, an altar\, and a dome that opens to the sky. The entire grotto is covered in symmetrically-balanced and geometric shell work. However\, nobody knows why or when this grand work of art was built\, or by whom. \n\n\n\nAccess to the Grotto includes two sets of stairs. The Grotto’s floor is uneven in places and has a slight camber. We regret it is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with reduced mobility. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRamsgate Tunnel Tours are 1.25 kilometres (0.78 mile) and will last for approximately 1 hour 30 mins. You will be accompanied by a guide throughout your tour. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended as the ground can be uneven (flat shoes\, boots). Flip-flops and thin sandals are not recommended. High heels are not permitted. The tunnels are a constant temperature of around 11 degrees Celsius; they may appear cold in summer but warm in winter. We are currently unable to accommodate mobility scooters\, wheelchairs\, prams and buggies.

DESCRIPTION:“Understanding Turner: The Man\, His Life\, His Work” by Prof Maria Chester \nHIS LIFE: Joseph Mallord William Turner was born into a troubled family and destined to become an artist. His father\, William\, a central figure throughout his life\, encouraged him to pursue his ambitions. Turner’s relationships\, character\, dreams\, notes\, poems\, lead to our own portrait of Turner\, helping us to understand the man\, what we perceive from his everyday life leads to the second talk. He loved to travel and we are lucky to be able to follow him in his trips thanks to his notes on the sketches\, citing places and dates. HIS WORK: We owe him a new approach to landscape\, and new techniques\, applied mostly to watercolours. He added songs and poems to his paintings to reinforce their meaning. He was almost a story-teller who knew exactly what to show and how to show it. He applied everything he experienced in his paintings. Together with “Understanding Turner: the man and his life” this talk aims to leave a permanent impression about one of our great British artists of all times: Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner was a contradiction in himself: born in Covent Garden at the centre of London he became one of the most important British landscape painters. The talk includes the Great Siege by the Turks in 1565\, and the much longer siege by the Italians and Germans in WW2. \n\n\n\nWe see why Rommel described Malta as “That scorpion in the sea” and look at Malta’s attractively restored World Heritage capital of Valletta with its impressive harbour and fortifications. \n\n\n\nFor 34 years I served in the Territorial Army\, Royal Signals. I have written and published the history of my regiment\, and am a keen military historian. I have been a travel lecturer since 2003. I give over 120 talks each year and also on cruise ships. I have visited over 60 countries. \n\n\n\nIn late 2018 I contributed to\, and appeared in the Quest TV railway documentary series ‘How Trains Changed The World’. I have a great interest in heritage transport. I am Vice Chairman of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society\, and a member of several UK steam railways and the Wey and Arun Canal trust.

She completed a doctorate on her favourite chemicals\, phosphines\, and went on to further postdoctoral research before realising that talking\, writing and demonstrating science appealed a bit more than hours slaving over a hot fume-hood. Kathryn’s first book was the international best-seller A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie\, which was shortlisted for a Mystery Readers International Macavity Award and a BMA Book Award. She has also written Making the Monster: The Science of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein\, and Death by Shakespeare: Snakebites\, Stabbings and Broken Hearts. A remarkable woman who lived with the daily threat of death for almost 5 years to help shorten the war for the allies. Her incredible courage and strength of purpose is an awe-inspiring tale of strength of purpose\, resolve and bravery. \n\n\n\nPaul Barwick spent 34 years in the Police Service in many different roles and responsibilities both in plain clothes and uniform. He spent many years in police intelligence\, focused on organised criminal networks and crimes of violence. In 2014 he acquired a national role in counter terrorism. He retired in 2019\, and set up a central London walking tour company focused on London’s rich history of espionage incidents and characters.

DESCRIPTION:“ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD ” by Imogen Corrigan \nImogen has a wide-ranging interest in medieval history which covers some 1\,000 years and a geographical area from western Ireland to Constantinople\, with an especial focus on ideas travelling and how the medieval mind-set might be examined through the art and artefacts left behind. This talk will be on Medieval Manuscripts and Imogen will be bringing copies of nineteen of the most beautiful manuscripts to illustrate the talk and these are listed on the last page of the booking form. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Lighting the Subject: Illuminated Manuscripts – An introduction to illuminated manuscripts of both pre- and post-Conquest periods. She subsequently went to the University of Kent to study Anglo-Saxon and Medieval History\, graduating with 1st Class Honours. Later she gained an MPhil from the University of Birmingham. She is now a freelance lecturer for the Arts Society\, U3As\, ACE Cultural Tours and numerous other agencies. Her first book was published in 2019 (Stone on Stone: the men who built the cathedrals). DESCRIPTION:“ART AND OBJECTS OF THE MUGHAL EMPERORS” by Dr Ursula Weekes \nThe Mughals established their dynasty in India in the early 16th century\, in an empire that soon stretched from Kabul in the west\, to Bengal in the east\, and from Kashmir in the north\, to the edges of the Deccan plateau in the south. Successive emperors were keenly aware of the importance of art\, architecture and luxury items to consolidate and enhance their power. Gift exchange was a fundamental aspect of Mughal court life. As a culture derived from the itinerant court traditions of their Mongol and Timurid ancestors\, they placed enormous value on the kinds of objects that were carried on one’s person (clothing\, jewellery\, weapons)\, in portable trunks (jade cups and illustrated manuscripts)\, and for setting up camp (carpets and tents). But the Mughals also drew extensively on Hindu concepts of sacred kingship and Indian architectural traditions to create a permanent presence in the landscape of North India. This study day offers a detailed examination of elite art\, architecture and objects made at the Mughal court in the 16th and 17th centuries. This talk will cover the tragic series of events that led to the murder of the Russian Imperial Family at Ekaterinburg in 1918.

DESCRIPTION:“A PASSION FOR DRAWING” by Colin Wiggins \nDrawing is the foundation stone of western art. In the 15th century artists used drawing to try out rough ideas before arriving at their final compositions. They made drawings from life that acted as studies for finished paintings. By the 16th century\, artists like Leonardo and Michelangelo were producing finely wrought drawings as works of art in their own right. Later\, Rembrandt and his contemporaries carried sketchbooks with them\, catching fleeting moments or recording places and landscapes they had visited. Nearer to our own time\, drawing became a medium for personal expression\, with painters as varied as van Gogh or Picasso inventing whole new ways of graphic expression. And drawing continues to be a vital part of today’s artistic practice\, with artists like Andy Warhol\, David Hockney and Tracey Emin all making their own contributions to this endlessly fascinating art form. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Art for God or Man? But the invention of photography changed everything4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Colin Wiggins began his career in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum\, which houses one of the greatest collections of drawings in the world. He then moved to the National Gallery\, where he worked for over 30 years as Head of Education and Special Projects Curator. While there\, he was responsible for the Associate Artist scheme\, inviting contemporary artists such as Paula Rego\, Peter Blake and Ana Maria Pacheco to become involved in the life of the Gallery and to hold exhibitions of their work there. During his time at the National Gallery\, he also curated exhibitions of work by artists such as Frank Auerbach\, Bridget Riley\, Lucian Freud and Sir Anthony Caro.
