SUMMARY:Understanding Lowry: The Man\, His Life & His Work
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1960s\, an art critic wrote in the Manchester Guardian: “Lowry was to Manchester what Constable was to Essex”. Once he found his way in expressing his feelings\, Laurence Stephen Lowry became the painter of industrial landscapes that surrounded him. After the 1960’s\, he felt that what he saw as industrial landscape was disappearing and decided to paint just figures against a white background. This Study Day will explore his time\, his life\, his relationships\, his style\, his palette and his massive body of work. Even when he was well-known as an artist and was selling well\, he kept his spartan style of life: no telephone\, no car\, no expenditure on clothes. He never married and he never travelled abroad but his work was very well known across the Atlantic and in the continent thanks to Lord Duveen\, an exquisite art dealer with his HQ in New York. Lowry has a long list of declined honours. The only one he really cared about was that of the Royal Academy\, “because it was good for business”.Places will be available in the hall or for on-line viewing. \n\n\n\nhttps://u3asites.org.uk/files/s/surreyu3anetwork/docs/st24nov.pdf

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - The Vikings & Their Influence in The World
DESCRIPTION:“The Vikings & Their Influence in The World” by Imogen Corrigan \n\n\n\nThe Viking Age was the period during the Middle Ages when Norsemen known as Vikings undertook large-scale raiding\, colonizing\, conquest\, and trading throughout Europe and reached North America. The Vikings almost need no introduction; an image is instantly conjured up of ferocious fighting men\, rampaging through our green and pleasant land\, plundering\, wrecking and desecrating. The study day covers some of the many influences arising from the Viking Age; 793–1066 AD. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 An Introduction to The Vikings11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 The Rus12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Viking Art and Legend2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Viking Women4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers – Imogen Corrigan spent over nineteen years in the army\, retiring in the rank of Major at the end of 1994. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - The Dead Sea Scrolls: What They Are & Why They Matter
DESCRIPTION:“The Dead Sea Scrolls: What They Are & Why They Matter” by Professor Hugh Williamson OBE FBA \n\n\n\nThe Dead Sea Scrolls were one of the most spectacular archaeological finds of the last century. They attracted enormous popular interest when first displayed but work on publication and interpretation has been going on ever since\, even if sometimes beneath the popular radar. But what exactly are they? Where did they come from\, and how do they relate to the buildings excavated nearby? Who wrote them? What do they tell us about the history of the text of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament\, and what light do they shed on the nature of Judaism at the time of Jesus? Over the decades all sorts of conspiracy theories have also grown up. Proper publication has now been completed (why did it take so long?) so that we are now in a better position to answer some of the many questions that they have raised over the decades. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 An Overview11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 The Biblical Text12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Interpreting the Bible2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 The Dead Sea Scrolls and Christianity4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers – Hugh Williamson was the Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford from 1992 until his retirement in 2014 (before that he was in Cambridge). His main research in the first part of his career was on the books of Chronicles\, Ezra and Nehemiah\, and he then moved on to work mainly on the book of Isaiah. But his interests go more widely than that\, not least in that for many years he participated in the archaeological excavations at Lachish and then at Jezreel. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - The Story of Polar Exploration & Arctic Frontiers in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:“The Story of Polar Exploration & Arctic Frontiers in a Changing Climate” by John Ash & Robert Headland \n\n\n\nThe speakers have extensive knowledge of polar research and are giving talks on historical activities and current concerns. Their biographical details are given below. Much UK interest in these areas is based at the Scott Polar Research Institute [SPRI] which was established in 1920 at the University of Cambridge as a centre of excellence in the study of the Arctic and Antarctic. The Institute also houses the World’s premier Polar Library and a Polar Museum with displays of both the history and contemporary significance of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. SPRI’s mission is to enhance the understanding of the polar regions through scholarly research\, publication\, educating generations of polar researchers\, caring for and making accessible its collections and projecting the history and environmental significance of the polar regions to the wider community for public benefit. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Unveiling the Arctic [Bob Headland] – An historical overview of Arctic discovery and exploration. This lecture is richly illustrated.11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Exploring Arctic Frontiers in a Changing Climate [John Ash] – Concepts of Arctic exploration.12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Shackleton [Bob Headland] – Ernest Shackleton’s story.2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Sledge Dogs & Sovereignty [John Ash] – The Sirius Patrol4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers – Dr John Ash is a former Royal Navy submariner and oceanographer. He was involved in the collection of data in the Arctic Ocean to support the study of thinning in the polar ice pack – some of the earliest evidence of climate change. Selected to lead a team of Russian researchers at Cambridge University examining radionuclide pollution in the Northern Seas\, he has also held a British Safety Council Fellowship at the Judge Institute of Management Studies at the University of Cambridge. John’s peer-reviewed publications address topics including climate change and conflict in the Arctic\, the relationship between Arctic fisheries protection and sovereignty\, and the security implications of Greenlandic independence. An Associate Professor at UiT\, Norway’s Arctic University\, John has presented oral evidence before the House of Commons Defence Sub-Committee examining UK defence in the Arctic.Bob Headland is a senior associate of SPRI. His work concerns human effects on Polar Regions\, especially the smaller islands and archipelagos. Archival details and other historical records – from the earliest expeditions to recent events – have allowed him to provide data for studies of long periods of climatic variation with glaciological and biological changes in the Polar Regions. An advisor to several expeditionary organizations and departments of government\, Bob is also a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the Institute for Historical Research\, University of London\, where he delivers lectures for several courses. The author of several books and papers on polar subjects\, Bob is a member of both the Arctic Club and the Antarctic Club. He was awarded the Polar Medal in 1984. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

He has published ten collections of poetry\, over twenty publications of limited-edition poetry\, art and collaborative works. He is a founder of the European Poetry Festival and has been teaching at Kingston University since 2014. James Haddow is the Taxi Driver Poet. He has published several collections of his verse which he describes as “racy\, raunchy\, topical\, soft\, sensitive\, brutal\, political\, satirical\, comical\, tough\, loving and spiteful” and much of it was originally delivered to the passengers in his taxi. Roger McGough was born and raised in Liverpool. A prolific writer\, he has published more than fifty books of adult and children’s poetry\, as well as several plays. Notable poetry collections include Defying Gravity (1992)\, The Way Things Are (1999)\, and That Awkward Age (2009). After university McGough dabbled as a pop singer and lyricist in the band the Scaffold which earned minor fame for his song “Lily the Pink” when topping the UK charts in 1968. Influenced by the Beat culture in the United States\, McGough embraces freedom of expression through his poems’ subjects and verse structure. He focuses primarily on the ordinary and every day\, and his poetry is both accessible and popular. He considers poetry a form of subversion and often uses various forms of humour\, particularly wordplay\, to confront serious topics in an effort to expose the subjectivity of reality. He currently hosts the Radio 4 program Poetry Please. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

Edwards (1831–1892) was an English novelist\, journalist\, traveller\, and Egyptologist. Edwards toured Egypt in the winter of 1873–1874\, experiencing a fascination with the land and its cultures\, ancient and modern. Journeying southwards from Cairo in a hired dahabiyeh (manned houseboat) she and a companion visited Philae and ultimately reached Abu Simbel\, where they remained for six weeks. Edwards wrote a successful\, self-illustrated description of her Nile voyage entitled “A Thousand Miles up the Nile” (1877). Her travels in Egypt made her aware of increasing threats to ancient monuments from tourism and modern development. She set out to hinder these through public awareness and scientific endeavour\, becoming an advocate for research and preservation of them. In 1882\, she co-founded the Egypt Exploration Fund with Reginald Stuart Poole\, a curator at the British Museum. Edwards became joint Honorary Secretary of the Fund until her death. She gained the nickname “Godmother of Egyptology” for her contribution. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Early Life of Amelia Edwards – An Unusual Upbringing 11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 A Literary Career – Novelist\, Ghost Stories & The Travelogue of Egypt12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Travelling “A Thousand Miles up the Nile” in 1873 2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 A New Enthusiasm for Amelia Edwards & Her Legacy in Egyptology4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Clive Barham Carter studied Egyptology at Cambridge (as the only undergraduate). He was awarded a scholarship with the Egypt Exploration Society to dig at Saqqara under Professor Walter Emery. Later\, he joined the staff at Charterhouse as a History teacher\, a position he accepted with some trepidation\, having been a pupil there. He managed to maintain his interest in Ancient Egypt by lecturing at the City Literary Institute\, and by sneaking Egypt into his General Studies classes. In retirement\, he has returned to his enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt and now lectures at the Guildford Institute\, and for u3as\, local groups and museums. He is an accredited lecturer with The Arts Society. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Industrial Archaeology at Fifty
DESCRIPTION:“Industrial Archaeology at Fifty” by Professors David Perrett and Martin Adams \n\n\n\nMany IA societies have just achieved their half-century and in 2023 the Association for Industrial Archaeology will also achieve that milestone. After a period of rapid growth in the 1970s and 1980s due to the role played by many adult education classes the societies are now more mature. However\, most are struggling from the after-effects of COVID that led to many sites closing\, some permanently\, some practitioners stood down and even library research became impossible\, IA now needs to find new followers and new subjects. This study day will address some of these questions and maybe raise others. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Industrial Archaeology\, an Overview: 11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Beer and Pickles: Brewing & Some Related Industries in London12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Three Mills\, Bow & The Birth of Modern Biotechnology: 2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Industrial Archaeology in London Today:4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – David Perrett is Professor Emeritus of Bioanalytical Science\, Barts & the London School of Medicine\, Queen Mary University of London. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Understanding Turner: The Man\, His Life\, His Work - Prof Maria Chester
DESCRIPTION:“Understanding Turner: The Man\, His Life\, His Work” by Prof Maria Chester \nHIS LIFE: Joseph Mallord William Turner was born into a troubled family and destined to become an artist. His father\, William\, a central figure throughout his life\, encouraged him to pursue his ambitions. Turner’s relationships\, character\, dreams\, notes\, poems\, lead to our own portrait of Turner\, helping us to understand the man\, what we perceive from his everyday life leads to the second talk. He loved to travel and we are lucky to be able to follow him in his trips thanks to his notes on the sketches\, citing places and dates. HIS WORK: We owe him a new approach to landscape\, and new techniques\, applied mostly to watercolours. He added songs and poems to his paintings to reinforce their meaning. He was almost a story-teller who knew exactly what to show and how to show it. He applied everything he experienced in his paintings. Together with “Understanding Turner: the man and his life” this talk aims to leave a permanent impression about one of our great British artists of all times: Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner was a contradiction in himself: born in Covent Garden at the centre of London he became one of the most important British landscape painters. In the 19th century\, he became the most recognisable British artist abroad \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Life11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Life\, Understanding & Analysing his Work12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Work\, His Techniques & Methods2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Understanding Turner: The Man & His Work4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Maria Chester studied Fine Arts & Art History. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Art and Objects of the Mughal Emperors - Dr Ursula Weekes
DESCRIPTION:“ART AND OBJECTS OF THE MUGHAL EMPERORS” by Dr Ursula Weekes \nThe Mughals established their dynasty in India in the early 16th century\, in an empire that soon stretched from Kabul in the west\, to Bengal in the east\, and from Kashmir in the north\, to the edges of the Deccan plateau in the south. Successive emperors were keenly aware of the importance of art\, architecture and luxury items to consolidate and enhance their power. Gift exchange was a fundamental aspect of Mughal court life. As a culture derived from the itinerant court traditions of their Mongol and Timurid ancestors\, they placed enormous value on the kinds of objects that were carried on one’s person (clothing\, jewellery\, weapons)\, in portable trunks (jade cups and illustrated manuscripts)\, and for setting up camp (carpets and tents). But the Mughals also drew extensively on Hindu concepts of sacred kingship and Indian architectural traditions to create a permanent presence in the landscape of North India. This study day offers a detailed examination of elite art\, architecture and objects made at the Mughal court in the 16th and 17th centuries. Join art historian and expert\, Dr Ursula Weekes\, in a day steeped in the magnificence of Mughal material culture. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Imperial Image: Visualizing the Mughal Emperor: their view of their dynastic rule11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 The Settings of the Court: Mughal Palaces\, Carpets and Tents: iconic buildings of the empire12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Mughal Portraiture: motivation behind the interest in realism in Mughal portraits2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 A Nobleman’s Attire: Textiles\, Jewellery & Personal Arms: the magnificent clothing\, textiles\,jewellery worn and weapons carried4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Dr Ursula Weekes is an independent art historian based in London\, who specializes in Mughal India. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - A Passion for Drawing - Colin Wiggins
DESCRIPTION:“A PASSION FOR DRAWING” by Colin Wiggins \nDrawing is the foundation stone of western art. In the 15th century artists used drawing to try out rough ideas before arriving at their final compositions. They made drawings from life that acted as studies for finished paintings. By the 16th century\, artists like Leonardo and Michelangelo were producing finely wrought drawings as works of art in their own right. Later\, Rembrandt and his contemporaries carried sketchbooks with them\, catching fleeting moments or recording places and landscapes they had visited. Nearer to our own time\, drawing became a medium for personal expression\, with painters as varied as van Gogh or Picasso inventing whole new ways of graphic expression. And drawing continues to be a vital part of today’s artistic practice\, with artists like Andy Warhol\, David Hockney and Tracey Emin all making their own contributions to this endlessly fascinating art form. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 Art for God or Man? The Renaissance Revolution – Many iconic works\, such as Leonardo’s LastSupper or Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel\, were all created through the use of drawing.11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Recording the World: Rembrandt\, Rubens and the Artist as Celebrity – As painting graduallybecame freed from subservience to wealthy patrons\, artists become more independent12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Facing the Truth? But the invention of photography changed everything4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Colin Wiggins began his career in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum\, which houses one of the greatest collections of drawings in the world. He then moved to the National Gallery\, where he worked for over 30 years as Head of Education and Special Projects Curator. While there\, he was responsible for the Associate Artist scheme\, inviting contemporary artists such as Paula Rego\, Peter Blake and Ana Maria Pacheco to become involved in the life of the Gallery and to hold exhibitions of their work there. During his time at the National Gallery\, he also curated exhibitions of work by artists such as Frank Auerbach\, Bridget Riley\, Lucian Freud and Sir Anthony Caro. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - The Development of British Style - Paul Atterbury
DESCRIPTION:“THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH STYLE +DESERT ISLAND ANTIQUES + LIFE ON THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW” by Paul Atterbury \nFrom the 1870s the British domestic house and its contents changed almost beyond recognition\, reflecting the social and economic revolution that paved the way for the modern world of today. Many factors contributed to this change\, from William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement\, to the rise of the department store\, suburban living\, the garden and the emancipation of women. After the First World War\, the pace of change increased\, prompting rapid stylistic development\, from 1920s and 1930s Art Deco to the modernism of the 1950s and 1960s and the style wars of the late 20th century. The first two talks consider architecture\, interior and domestic design and the products that reflected the fashions of the time. In the process they show how the last 150 years have determined the way we live now. \nPaul Atterbury has been involved all his life in the world of art and antiques\, as a writer\, historian\, collector and exhibition curator. The two talks in the afternoon offer an insight into his life\, his enthusiasms and his time as a member of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow team of experts. \n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Arts and Crafts House and Garden11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 At Home in the 20th Century12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 Paul Atterbury’s Desert Island Antiques2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Life on the Antiques Roadshow4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Paul Atterbury is a writer\, lecturer\, historian\, curator and broadcaster specialising in the art\, architecture\, design and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries. SUMMARY:Surrey Network Study Day - Tutankhamun\, The Boy King - Clive Barham Carter
DESCRIPTION:“The Most Famous Pharaoh of Them All: Tutankhamun\, The Boy King” by Clive Barham Carter \nTutankhamen was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who was the last of his royal family to rule during the end of the 18th dynasty; he ruled c. 1334 – 1325 BC in the conventional chronology during the New Kingdom of Egyptian history. His father was the heretical king Akhenaten and his mother was his father’s sister\, identified through DNA testing. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun’s nearly intact tomb\, funded by Lord Carnarvon\, received worldwide press coverage. With over 5000 artefacts\, it sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt\, for which Tutankhamun’s mask\, now in the Egyptian Museum\, remains a popular symbol. \n\n\nProgramme9.30 Registration10.00 The Valley of the Kings – the Where11.00 Coffee / Tea11.30 Carter and Carnarvon – the Who12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available1.30 The Tomb – the What2.30 Tea / Coffee3.00 Tut.Ankh.Amen and Restoration – and the Why4.00 Departure \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Clive Barham Carter studied Egyptology at Cambridge (as the only undergraduate). In retirement\, he has returned to his enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt and now lectures at the Guildford Institute\, and for U3A\, local groups and museums. He is an accredited lecturer with The Arts Society. \n\n\n\nFor full information please see the BOOKING FORM
