SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Britain's Amazing Aircraft Industry
DESCRIPTION:14:00-14:30 – Refreshments – 14:30-14:45 – Announcements – 14:45-16:00 – Talk \n\n\n\n\n\nBritain once had an enormous and arguably the most advanced aircraft industry in the world. How did we reach there and why are we now so weak\, or are we? Greed\, Bad Management\, Corruption and Politics all played a part. \n\n\n\n\nThe talk includes both the civil and military side of aviation. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be given by Andy Richardson\, who has been involved in Aviation throughout his adult life. Starting with an 18-year flying career in The Royal Air Force which included crewing the nuclear armed Avro Vulcan during the cold war. In 1980 he took early retirement to pursue a second career focusing on International Business Development within the Aerospace Industry.Initially working with British Aerospace in the UK. Later\, a break enabled him to join the American giants McDonnell Douglas and then the Boeing Company following their merger. His last Boeing appointment was as a European Marketing Director within the Military Aircraft Division. Post retirement\, he continued to work with them and other companies as an Aerospace consultant into his early 70s.He now travels the country delivering a range of interesting talks – all of course with an Aviation theme!

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - The Kilted Tommy
DESCRIPTION:14:00-14:30 – Refreshments – 14:30-14:45 – Announcements – 14:45-16:00 – Talk \n\n\n\n\n\nThe talk will be given by Simon Waterfield. \n\n\n\nHistorical Interpretation Through Drama \n\n\n\nSimon Waterfield is a historical researcher\, writer and storyteller. He creates stories that bring history and people to life. Historical Interpretation through drama answers the question ‘What is History?’ from the view of a common man caught up in historic events. \n\n\n\nThe Kilted Tommy \n\n\n\nThese Historical Interpretations are based on the life and times of Harry Kay (Simon’s maternal grandfather)\, and his family. He was a volunteer in Kitchener’s Army during the First World War. \n\n\n\n The Kilted Tommy \n\n\n\nThe dramatized monologue is the story of an ordinary Englishman who joined a Highland Regiment\, the Seaforth Highlanders\, and\, surprisingly joined thousands of other Englishmen who fought in kilts for their country.Spoken and acted in a way to include the audience in his reminiscence\, we hear about why Harry joined up\, his training\, his first battle at Loos\, his other battles\, the nature of comradeship\, and how his experiences influenced his life in the aftermath of the Great War. \n\n\n\nSimon gives various talks on historical subjects and people. The story lasts 50mins and is done in costume.

SUMMARY:Exploring Johann Sebastian Bach's St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sandy Burnett\, Musical Director and BroadcasterPlaces will be available in the hall or for on-line viewing. \n\n\n\nEspecially appropriate for the lead up to Easter\, Sandy Burnett joins us for a special presentation onJohann Sebastian Bach’s Matthew Passion\, a masterful work which combines tunefulness\,craftsmanship\, dramatic power and spirituality in equal measure. Initially composed for a Good Fridayservice in Bach’s Leipzig\, the St Matthew Passion has since been performed infinitely more often thanit ever was in Bach’s own lifetime. During the course of this study day\, Sandy explains why this workis so special; he guides us through music examples\, picks out details in the score\, examines Bach’sautograph manuscripts\, and reflects on the extraordinarily vivid Passion texts. After an overview ofBach’s life and work\, we explore each dramatic stage of the Passiontide drama\, before reflecting onthe work’s context as one of the greatest Western art works of all. \n\n\n\nhttps://u3asites.org.uk/files/s/surreyu3anetwork/docs/st25mar.pdf

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - AGM + "Caring for the River Mole"
DESCRIPTION:14:00-14:30 – Refreshments \n\n\n\n14:30-14:45 – Announcements \n\n\n\n14:45-16:00 – Talk \n\n\n\nThe talk will be given by:- Sue and Nigel Bond \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAGM + Caring for the River Mole Talk\n\n\nWe will first hold our brief AGM which will be followed by the talk. \n\n\n\nMyth has it that the River Mole is so named because it flows underground for part of its journey through Sussex and Surrey.  Rising Southwest of Crawley the River Mole flows Northwards to the Thames\, and in its upper reaches it has an extensive network of tributaries including the Gatwick Stream\, the Stanford Brook and the Burstow Stream. \n\n\n\nAs it flows downstream it passes through historic Norbury Park before flowing through Leatherhead and eventually joining the Thames at Molesey opposite Hampton Court Palace.  The Mole is famous for its spectacular river cliffs near Box Hill and its swallow holes where the river at time of low flow disappears underground before emerging further downstream. \n\n\n\nThe Southeast River Trust co-host the catchment partnership for the Mole with the Surrey Wildlife Trust.

SUMMARY:Understanding Lowry: The Man\, His Life & His Work
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1960s\, an art critic wrote in the Manchester Guardian: “Lowry was to Manchester what Constable was to Essex”. Once he found his way in expressing his feelings\, Laurence Stephen Lowry became the painter of industrial landscapes that surrounded him. After the 1960’s\, he felt that what he saw as industrial landscape was disappearing and decided to paint just figures against a white background. This Study Day will explore his time\, his life\, his relationships\, his style\, his palette and his massive body of work. Even when he was well-known as an artist and was selling well\, he kept his spartan style of life: no telephone\, no car\, no expenditure on clothes. He never married and he never travelled abroad but his work was very well known across the Atlantic and in the continent thanks to Lord Duveen\, an exquisite art dealer with his HQ in New York. Lowry has a long list of declined honours. The only one he really cared about was that of the Royal Academy\, “because it was good for business”.Places will be available in the hall or for on-line viewing. \n\n\n\nhttps://u3asites.org.uk/files/s/surreyu3anetwork/docs/st24nov.pdf

SUMMARY:History of Photography & Modern Developments
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Roger Mendham\, President of Surrey Photographic Association \n\n\n\nFrom the very first\, grainy image created in 1826\, photography has evolved into a major art form\, with image collections and exhibitions in leading Art Museums around the world. Developments in photography have posed challenges to more traditional art genres and it interesting to see how some of the great artists have adapted to using cameras as part of their work. The study day looks at photography over the past nearly 200 years\, highlighting key advances in technology\, including the advent of the first Kodak camera\, the evolution from mono to full colour images and the latest digital\, phone and drone photography. The work of pioneering women photographers is particularly interesting\, and the study day includes mention of examples of some great photographs that have been sold for millions of dollars at auction. The final session will discuss and critique some of the images submitted by members of the audience in advance.Places will be available in the hall or for on-line viewing. \n\n\n\nhttps://u3asites.org.uk/files/s/surreyu3anetwork/docs/st24oct.pdf
