This study day examines how, through the “Space Race” of the 1960s, we got to the Moon and what
we learned in the process. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, the Moon gradually became a forgotten world until, in
the ‘90s, a new generation of robotic spacecraft revealed the Moon to be more interesting than we
had thought. The 21st century has seen the rise of new space powers and China is rapidly becoming a
space superpower, while in the West, private enterprise has taken the lead. Detailed plans exist for
humanity to go back to the Moon – this time to stay. Why should we go, and who will get there first?
